Sorghum, (Sorghum bicolor), also called great millet, Indian millet, milo, durra, orshallu, cereal grain plant of the grass family and its edible starchy seeds. The plant likely originated in Africa, where it is a major food crop, and has numerous varieties, including grain sorghums, used for food; grass sorghums, grown for hay and fodder; and. The smut spores are enclosed in a fragile, gray membrane that soon ruptures to release the airborne spores. By the time the grain matures, the spores are dispersed, leaving only a bare rachis. COMMENTS ON THE DISEASE. Most loose smut pathogens survive from one season to the next as dormant mycelium inside infected seed.

Grain sorghum hybrids vary considerably in their susceptibility. Growers should select adapted, high producing hybrids that have resistance to this fungus. Growing highly susceptible grain or forage sorghum builds up populations of the organism in soil, making . The smuts of wheat, oats, barley, corn, sorghum, and millet are known to most farmers, since these diseases occur in all parts of Kansas wherever one of these crops is grown.
